Mack Trucks, Century of Bulldog Trucking
70Incomparable Dependability
Mack Trucks: the supreme leader of truck-manufacturing companies in the world is now well into their second Century of unparalleled strength and reliability. From its' humble beginnings in a dusty Brooklyn garage, to the first bus produced in America which drove a Million miles, to the incomparable dependability they proved during the 1'st and 2"nd World Wars, to the Global prominence they now have in over 45 countries world-wide, Mack trucks are synonymous with relentless power and steadfastness.
During WWII the Mack AC proved to be unstoppable and British soldiers were impressed enough to dub the AC model "Bulldog" after its snub nose hood and ferocious tenacity. The nickname stuck and a trucking legend with its uniquely characteristic silver-colored bulldog logo was born.
Today Mack trucks are built to be as tough and indomitable as the people who drive them and are at the apex of occupational and on road vehicle market, leading classes 8 through 13. Mack continues to leverage its strong brand identity and innovative spirit to meet the commercial transportation needs of heavy-duty first-class highway models and off-road trucks of today, tomorrow and into the future.
Built like a Mack. Was. Is. Always will be.
Now a subsidiary of AB Volvo, Mack truck's company headquarters are located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, situated in the Lehigh valley region of the state, while the primary manufacturing facility is situated in neighboring town of Macungie. The one-million-square-foot plant is involved in the production of several Mack Granite and Terra Pro models. The combination of strength, power, and innovative thinking has made Mack the perpetual construction trucking leader, and is precisely why Mack is the dominant maker of refuse trucks in North America
Other production facilities include:
- Hagerstown, Maryland, and New River Valley, Virginia
- Right-hand drive vehicles division, located in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, which manages worldwide distribution.
- Mack de Venezuela C.A., located in Caracas of Venezuela, which is the assembly point of South America.
- The knockdown chassis facility in Caracas Venezuela. The components for this facility are actually shipped from U.S. and the plant final assembling of trucks.
- Mack's Remanufacturing centre is located in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Remanufacturing involves refurbishing used parts of trucks for resale or reuse.
All trucks measure revolutions per minute.
At Mack we measure revolutions per century.
Design Driven to Innovation: The Evolution of Trucking
- 1905 CABOVER ENGINE DESIGN: Mack was one of the first manufacturers to mount a cab over the engine, boosting driver visibility and maneuverability on busy city streets.
- 1920 POWER BRAKES: Mack pioneered power brakes by using a vacuum-booster system, vastly improving safety for trucks.
- 1938 DIESEL ENGINE: Mack was the first truck manufacturer to design and build its own diesel engines.
- 1967 MAXIDYNE® ENGINE: A technological breakthrough occurred when Walter May, then Executive V-P, invented the high-torque engine, providing augmented maximum horsepower over a longer range of revolutions. Fuel efficiency increased and the need for shifting decreased.
- 1969 CAB AIR SUSPENSION:Drivers became a lot more comfortable when Mack developed this major ride and durability improvement.
- R/RB, RD, U, DM-Models: As early as 1960 production started on R and U models for highway use while RD and DM models were specially manufactured for construction applications. All 4 models had the same cab, but the U and DM models had cab offset on the left side. The 3 piece steel hoods were converted to 1-piece hood. The R and U models were discontinued after 1980, at which time RB models were introduced and specially manufactured for severe duty applications.
- 2002-2005: The Granite and Granite Bridge Formula were Mack's answer to the markets desire for lightweight vehicles that didn't sacrifice durability. The Granite models featured a strong, centered cab, plush seats, and an ergonomic dashboard, keeping drivers safe and comfortable.
- 1999VEHICLE INFORMATION PROFILER: Mack revolutionized truck electronics with the innovative V.I.P.TM system, the industry's largest in-dash diver display, helping trucks operate efficiently.
